The Tartan Cowgirl was born from a lifelong love of the Scottish Highlands and the American West—the warmth of their people, the beauty of their landscapes, and the wild, untamed spirit they share.

You might ask: Why “tartan” and not “plaid”?
There’s a rich history behind Scottish tartan—its patterns, symbolism, and craftsmanship. While anyone can dive deeper into its origins, my appreciation for tartan became personal the day I made my first hand-stitched kilt (with guidance from the wonderful women at the Keith Textile Center kilt school in Keith, Scotland).

What began as a fun project opened the door to something deeper and more meaningful. As I worked each section of the kilt, I thought about heritage, tradition, and the value of skilled hands creating something meant to last and be handed down. Even though I’m not Scottish by ancestry, the country has shaped my life in many ways—it’s where my husband is from, where we met, and where our first child was born. I fell in love with the country as well as the fabric itself: its strength, warmth, timelessness, and endless beauty.

That experience brought me back to not just another kilt (it can be addicting), but memories of my own beginnings and running wild in my boots across the pastures of my family’s ranch in the Texas Hill Country, that connection to the spirit of the land. I began to realize my own roots and my adult connection to Scotland could be woven together. What better way of expression than in what you wear and in creating new things?

The Tartan Cowgirl is the result: a curated fusion of rugged Western charm, free-spirited adventure, and a heartfelt love for Scottish tartans, tweeds, plaids, and things distinctly American.
